How online slots work

A slot has a set of reels carrying symbols. You choose a stake, spin, and the reels stop on a combination. If that combination matches a line on the game's paytable, it pays; if not, the stake is lost. Everything else — the animation, the near-miss, the sound — is presentation layered on top of that single event.

The combination is chosen by a random number generator that is tested and certified by an independent laboratory. The outcome is settled the instant you spin, before any reel appears to move. Stopping the reels early changes nothing, and neither does the size of your stake, the time of day, or how long a game has gone without paying.

Each spin is independent. A game that has not paid in a hundred spins is exactly as likely to pay on the next one as it was on the first. There is no such thing as a slot being due.

Return to player is the proportion of all staked money the game returns over a very large number of rounds. A 96% RTP means the game keeps about 4% across millions of spins, not that a session returns 96% of what you put in. Volatility describes the spread: low volatility pays small amounts often, high volatility pays rarely and larger, and both can share the same RTP.

On a progressive slot, a slice of every bet feeds a shared pool that grows until somebody wins it. That slice comes out of the base game's return, which is why progressives often have a lower base RTP than fixed-jackpot games.
